At the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed, Lamborghini Squadra Corse unveiled its inaugural hybrid endurance racing prototype, the SC63. Soon to commence testing, the SC63 is slated to compete in the Hypercar class of the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship, including renowned races such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans, as well as in the GTP class of the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship Endurance Cup, featuring iconic events like the 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring. Collaborating with Italian team Iron Lynx, Lamborghini aims to establish a strong presence in international competitions by enlisting top-tier drivers from the worlds of Formula 1 and endurance racing.
The Lamborghini SC63 showcases an entirely new 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, meticulously developed by Lamborghini engineers exclusively for the racing program. Notably, the engine employs a "cold V" configuration, positioning the turbos outside the engine's vee angle. This design facilitates improved cooling and serviceability of the turbos. Additionally, the "cold V" layout contributes to reduced mass and optimized center of gravity, aligning with the car's specifically tailored aerodynamic balance and attitude. This combination has been identified as the most effective approach to deliver optimal tire grip, impeccable balance, drivability, and consistent speed, both over a single lap and throughout lengthy endurance races.
The power output from the engine and the hybrid system, conforming to the standard for LMDh-category cars, is limited by regulations to 500kW (680 CV). Bosch's electronic control unit skillfully manages the Power Unit. The LMDh rule set stipulates a standardized gearbox, battery, and motor generator unit (MGU), effectively curbing development costs associated with the prototype.
