Recognizing cars: Audi S5 & RS5

Some time ago, we gave new life to the series of recognizing cars with an episode of the Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG. Today, we scrutinize the Audi S5 and RS5. What makes the S5 different from the RS5, and, maybe even more important, what are the differences between the first- and the facelift version of these models.

Audi S5 B8 & S5 B8 2012
We start off with the first S5, which was introduced back in 2009. Equipped with the 4.2 FSI with 354 hp, this was the first S-offspring of the Audi A5-line. The S5 is built on the B8-platform, the same platform as used by the Audi A4 and Q5. You can recognize the Audi S5 on the following points: there are four exhaust which are clearly present at the back, but also the front- and rear bumper are different. In 2012, the facelift was introduced. The 4.2 FSI was changed for a 3.0 TFSI with 333 hp, and also some exterior changes were done. The head- and taillights were slightly changed, so as the bumpers.

The S5 Sportback was also introduced back in 2009, this car had the 3.0 TFSI straight from the beginning. The Sportback has got two extra doors compared to the Coupé, so it’s quite easy to recognize. The different bumpers and exhausts are also applicable here, so as the 2012 facelift. The 3.0 TFSI remained the same, and also this model had the headlights revised.

Audi S5 Cabriolet B8 & S5 Cabriolet B8 2012
The Audi S5 Cabriolet is the last model in the A5 series which is released as an S-model. This car also had the 3.0 TFSI under the hood. The S5 Cabriolet is characterized by, of course, the roof. Further, this car is the same as the Coupé, except for the engine. Then we continue with the facelift. At the same time as the Coupe and the Sportback, the Cabriolet was also refreshed. The grille was changed and the lighting got an update, just like the other S5 models.

We’ve reached the most powerful versions of the A5-series, the RS5. The difference with the S5 is very clear on the front with the grille which gives the car an aggressive look. The mirrors have a matte chrome colour. At the back, we see only two big oval exhausts instead of the four pipes the S5 has. The brakes are even bigger than on the S5 and we see "RS" on the calipers. This are the most characterizing differences on the outside. Behind the tough grill, there’s a 4.2 FSI engine which produces 450 hp. This engine wasn’t replaced during the facelift in 2012 because it’s just a great engine. On the outside, we see an update of the headlights, taillights and bumpers.
