Event: Long Beach Grand Prix 2022

The 47th Annual Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach was back in its usual early-April timeslot for 2022. After the cancellation of the 2020 event because of the pandemic and the 2021 event moved to the fall while still under COVID-19 restrictions; this year’s festivities felt the closest to “normal” in nearly three years.

Record temperatures on Friday, where the heat reached over 101 degrees didn’t deter the crowds. Race fans turned out in droves to the temporary street course by the beach. Early returns show that the crowd exceeded 187,000 for the three-day event, a number that will meet or exceed 2019.

As always, fans were treated to non-stop on-track action: Porsche Carrera Cup, IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship, Historic IMSA GTP & Group C, Stadium Super Trucks, & Formula D Super Drift.

While fans were eager to see the newest & latest in racing technology, the historic IMSA GTP & Group C cars may have stolen the show. Mazda Motorsports brought three of the most iconic race cars in the history of sportscar racing: the 767B, 787, & RX792-B. Zak Brown, the Chief Executive of McLaren Racing even brought his beautiful 1989 Jaguar XJR10. The field also featured the iconic Porsche 962 & Eagle Toyota MkIII. To see these machines on-track and not sitting on display was something truly special.

Saturday’s events were highlighted by the 100-minute IMSA Sportscar Grand Prix of Long Beach sprint race; the race featured the DPi, GTD PRO, & GTD classes. The race was won by polesitters Sebastien Bourdais & Renger van der Zande in the #01 Chip Ganassi Racing Cadillac DPi. The #23 Heart of Racing Aston Martin Vantage GT3 took home the GTD PRO win piloted by Ross Gunn & Alex Riberas. And the GTD class was won by the #1 Paul Miller Racing BMW M4 GT3 driven by Bryan Sellers & Madison Snow.

Sunday’s feature race was the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach IndyCar event. Josef Newgarden took home his second win of the NTT IndyCar season for Team Penske. He was joined on the podium by Romain Grosjean (Andretti Autosport DHL Honda #28) and the 2021 series champion Alex Palou (Chip Ganassi Racing NTT Data Honda #10).
