Geneva 2015: Ferrari 488 GTB

One of the most important scoops in Geneva is the new Ferrari 488 GTB. With more power, renewed looks and an even better performance this is a worthy successor of the very successful 458 Italia. During the Geneva Motor Show we can take the first look at this new model in the new colour Rosso Corsa Met.

For the first time in 40 years after the introduction of the 308 GTB Ferrari opens a new chapter in the history of the mid-rear positioned V8 model. The 488 GTB is Ferrari’s answer to the Lamborghini Huracán LP610-4 and the McLaren 650S Coupé which both stay behind on the aspect of power. Everything became better compared with the almost perfect 458 Italia.

Ferrari powers the 488 GTB with a turbo engine, just like the California T. The 3.902cc V8 turbo engine produces 670 hp at 8.000 rpm and has a maximum torque of 760 Nm. It’s inconceivable that this is just the entry level model of Ferrari. With this much power the car sprints to 200 kph in only 8.3 seconds. The Enzo Ferrari needs up to 9.9 seconds to do this.

The aerodynamics of the car make a significant contribution to the performance. The effenciency figure is a new record for a production Ferrari and it’s the result of a 50 percent increased downforce and lower air resistance. The 488 GTB has all sorts of spoilers including a double front spoiler, special air intakes at the sides and the implementation of active aerodynamics at the back, in combination with the spoiler at the back, give the Ferrari a lot of grip.

Now the looks. The Ferrari Styling Centre developed the 488 GTB. The big front immediately stands out just like the enormous air intakes at the side which provide the turbos with enough air. According to Ferrari the big and characterizing air intake refers to the 308 GTB. Everything looks more muscular and manly than the 458 Italia which looks more elegant than the 488 GTB. The round LED taillights are also new. In the interior we don’t see big adjustments. Ferrari did redesign the interface of the infotainment system. Next to that, Ferrari only refined the interior of the car.
